Italian as a second language test for non-EU students
ServiziNon-EU students (i.e. students who are not EU citizens) residing abroad who wish to enrol at a University in Italy, must prove their knowledge of the Italian language. They may do so by submitting a valid language certificate from among those listed below, or by passing the Italian language proficiency test required by the chosen university.
Italian language proficiency test
The Italian language proficiency test in place at the University of Verona is the CISIA ITA-L2 test.
To enroll at University of Verona, a minum score of 55 out of 72 is required.
Please note that this is an online test. A fee of € 20 is required in order to take the test.
Applicants must take the test either by:
- logging into the CISIA portal using their PC
- accessing the online classroom via the WEBEX app using their smartphone
Applicants registered on Universitaly, in accordance with the procedures set out in the Circular of the Italian Ministry of University and Research about the enrolment of international students, are advised that it is their responsibility to prepare in advance to take the test remotely, following the instructions available on the CISIA website.
Applicants registered on Universitaly for University of Verona must:
- register on Esse3 (instructions for enrollment): use the same e-mail address used to access the Universitaly web site
- register for the Italian language test "Prova di conoscenze della lingua italiana ITA-L2" on Esse3, selecting Menù -> Registrar's Office -> Eligibility Check and selecting one of the available exam session:
Those who are admitted to each test will receive a confirmation e-mail, along with instructions on how to make the payment of the € 20 fee; those who are not admitted will receive a rejection e-mail.
Each session has limited places.
Among those who will register on the Esse3 portal, only the following will be admitted to the test in order of application submission date:
- those registered on the Universitaly portal who have applied for the University of Verona;
- those who have not been rejected in any previous exam session;
- those who have not been absent from any previous exam session without providing a justification.

Within each session, the test date is assigned automatically based on the number of applicants. Applicants will not be able to choose their preferred test date and will receive an e-mail with instructions approximately five days before the test.
Applicants who do not take part in the test by failing to connect on the assigned test date will be regarded as withdraw. Applicants who can demonstrate that they were unable to take the test on their assigned date for justified reasons may be allowed to take the test on another date, subject to slot availability. In this case as well, dates will be allocated automatically.
Applicants who have successfully registered for the test will be admitted to take the test on the first available test date.
Italian language certificates
You will be exempt from taking a language proficiency test if:
- you hold an Italian language certificate at B2 level issued by one of the following institutions: Università per stranieri di Perugia; Università per stranieri di Siena; Università Roma Tre; Società Dante Alighieri; Università per stranieri Dante Alighieri di Reggio Calabria, including within Italian Cultural Institutes abroad or other authorised institutions. Language certificates may be obtained by taking the relevant test in the applicant’s home country, at an approved test centre;
- you have already taken, in 2025 and 2026, the same CISIA ITA-L2 test organised by another University, achieving a score of at least 55 points. In this case, you must submit the test certification to our office, where it will be checked for authenticity.

PLEASE NOTE: applicants are strongly advised to submit their documentation in good time to allow for possible registration for the test, should the documentation, following assessment by the relevant offices, be deemed unsuitable for exemption purposes.
