How does the Call for Applications work?
The Call is organised as follows:
- Page 1 to page 10: general information and standard application procedure applicable to all the PhD Programmes.
- Page 11 to page 57: Annex 1, containing the details for each PhD programme, including the number of positions and scholarships available, the criteria for evaluating qualifications, the dates of the admission exam sessions, the language, methods and criteria for selection.
More information about each PhD Programme (PhD Board composition, Training and Research lines, Italian University system, etc.) is available at each PhD programme's webpage.
-
How to apply?
The application procedure is described in art. 4 of the Call for Applications and in the "Guidelines for application", available on each PhD Programme's webpage ("Documents and news" section).
-
My Master's Degree was awarded by a non-Italian University. Shall I apply?
Yes. Please carefully read art. 5 of the Call, where you will find all details related to the paperwork you'll need to attach to your application.
-
I haven't graduated yet, shall I apply?
Yes, provided that the degree is awarded by the day before the official starting date of the PhD programme, i.e., September 30, 2025. Please refer to the Art. 3.2 of the Call.
-
My degree will be/was jointly awarded by an Italian University and by a foreign University (e.g. Erasmus Mundus Master's Programmes)
You should proceed as indicated in art. 5 of the Call for non-Italian degrees.
-
What kind of Degree is required for admission, provided that I hold a non-Italian degree?
You must hold an academic qualification (i.e. Master of Science/Art) awarded by a Higher Education Institution, allowing access to further studies (PhD level) at academic institutions in the issuing Country.
If you hold a foreign Bachelor's degree and an Italian "Laurea Magistrale", please only select "Laurea Magistrale" in the online application on the Esse3 system.
-
I requested a reference letter, but my professor refused to send it to me directly. Shall I tell them to send it to the University of Verona?
No. Since we receive thousands of applications, we cannot manage matching reference letters with each application.
If a professor is unwilling to send it to you, we suggest you ask someone else for another reference letter.
-
I am registering to the Esse3 system and I am requested to enter my Italian Tax ID number. As I do not hold it, how can I proceed?
You should simply select the option:
I declare that I am a foreign student without Italian Tax ID no.
Please refer to the "Guidelines for application", available on each PhD Programme's webpage ("Documents and news" section) for further instructions on how to fill out your application.
