After a general introduction into scintillator field several material systems based on oxide single crystals,      optical ceramics and nanocrystals will be reviewed as for their optical, luminescence and  scintillation     characteristics and the understanding fundamental physical processes. It will be shown how the    understanding of fundamental physics of the material and of its scintillation mechanism can substantially     improve its practical performance and figure of merit.  Few application examples will be provided as well.
